October 16: The Alzheimer’s Association, Quincy Area Branch, invites families and health care professionals caring for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory-loss disorders to attend a free, two-part Caregiver Challenges Series. The sessions will be held Thursdays, Oct. 16th and 23th, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., at the East Adams Rural Clinic, 102 Prairie Mills Rd, Golden. This two-part series is appropriate to attend if two or more of these statements are applicable to the individual with memory loss: Exhibits behavior changes; has difficulty sequencing tasks such as bathing, dressing, driving or eating; experiences difficulty expressing an idea or naming an object, and/or has developed repetitive speech or behavior patterns.
Participants will learn how to enhance the quality of life for persons with memory loss, reduce stress, plan and provide meaningful activities, explore community resource options and receive valuable tips on ways to cope with the daily challenges of caregiving. Those attending will receive a free, 100-page Caregiver Manual.
The program will be presented by Quincy Area Branch Program Specialist Barb Richmiller, R.N. Richmiller, who has over 30 years experience in geriatric nursing care, will also allow time to answer specific questions about memory loss challenges at each session. Seating is limited; to register call 217-228-1111. The series is made possible through a grant from the West Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging.

October 30: 3rd Annual Veteran’s Career Fair at John Wood Community College, Student Activities Center, from 10:00am-1:00pm. We are expecting 50 employers and service agencies to participate. Although this event is targeted towards veterans, anyone seeking employment is encouraged to attend. Bring plenty of resumes and be dressed for job interviews. There is no cost for employers or job seekers to attend this event. Thanksgiving Day - New Years Day: Avenue of Lights is a beautiful drive-through holiday light display. This spectacular animated display, lining two miles of Moorman-Wavering Park is new and different each year. Nearly 375 pieces, will combine to make over 100 display groupings. Emergency Home Response Service is a 24-hour emergency 2-way communication link that consists of a base unit and an activation device worn by the client that will automatically connect the older adult to a professionally staffed support center that will get them the help they need.
Deb Poore a Case manager from the West Central Illinois Case Coordination Unit will give an informational talk on Emergency Home Response for Seniors at this TRIAD (The Right Information And Direction) meeting.
